-- story by American Choppers

Outta Hand

Why it's so hard to keep things simple Bike building is a crapshoot. Maybe that's why dice are such indelible symbols that have marked many a chopper for as long as they've been riding the highways. The gamble takes many forms: Can it be done? Is there time? Is there money? Can we keep it simple and under budget? It goes on from there, but as Will Douglas explained, the bike you see here started out as a simple, low-budget new/old-school chop. But, as the dice rolled on, these guidelines went straight out the window.

Will, David King and Linn Colvin are the three co-owners behind Big Daddy Choppers (www.bigdad-dychoppers.com) in Ripley, Tennessee. They specialize in one-off choppers with a "modern old-school" twist. BDC has constructed theme bikes for the NRA and Bikers Against Drunk Driving, among others, and their list of custom choppers has been growing steadily for the last four years.

As a reaction to all the mortgage-wrenching customs that are taking over these days, BDC wanted to do a simple, tradition-meets-modern day chop that wasn't a bank breaker. Inevitably the crapshoot starts when one of the boys utters the phrase, "Well, we could try this..." and the sled became a top-shelf ride by default. But why make that a bad thing? Smoke this scoot over a few times and you'll see what Big Daddy Choppers is all about. Sometimes there's only one way to do the job right, and these boys nailed it, budgetary concerns notwithstanding. Besides, they can always do that with the next one ....
