READY FOR THE RIDE!

High-Profile Cruising With A Bike To Match

-- story by Joe Kress

OK, let's say you get a phone call inviting you along on a little ride. Only it turns out that ride isn't going to be so little. Leading the pack will be none other than Arlen Ness and he'll be flanked by Cory Ness and Roland Sands from Performance Machine. The whole thing's going to be taped for TV-a Discovery Channel deal- and it's all going to happen in sunny Puerto Rico. Now, you can hardly show up for something like that with an oil-leaking beater rolling with bald tires, right? If there's ever going to be a time to put your best foot forward this would be it. Chip Miylar of Mid-West Choppers, the guy who got that call, definitely showed up in style. He showed up with this bike, a cobalt blue model he calls "Aggression." As luck would have it, when the phone call came he was just easing this thing off the assembly table so he was good to go.

A one-off custom, it's based on Mid-West's 2005-2006 Pro Chop model, only taken to the nth degree. For one thing, there's a lot more bodywork here, Chip says. "I tend to like a lot of fender on a bike," he says. "I'd rather see the beauty in the paint job instead of looking at a dirty tire." But, basically, this bike has the same overall stamp as any production model coming out of Mid-West. This bike actually started out as a customer project. During the build, however, the guy seemed to change his mind about what he wanted every 15 minutes or so, Chip says. It finally came to the point where Chip had to tell him, "Why don't you just do something else entirely. This one is so far along in this style it's just stupid to keep cutting it up and going back and forth with all these changes." So Chip ended up finishing this bike for himself, keeping it around the shop for his personal use. Aggression began with a Pro-Street Frameworks frame package, heavily modified at Mid-West. All the special molding, the sheet metal work, the wickedly stretched tank, the spoiler on the front, all happened in Galesburg, Illinois. "And, of course, we do everything in steel," Chip says, "so the raised details on the bike, the stuff accented in silver and running right down the center, from the front downtube, across the top of the tank and continuing onto the front and rear fenders is all metal. It's lightweight angle iron that we heated and formed into place. Our up¬holstery guy, Ivan, carried that theme across the seat, too and even the pop-up fuel filler has that raised-edge detail. Anywhere there's sil¬ver on this bike it has that highlighted detail." The base color, cobalt blue, is also pretty tricky looking. Depending on how the sun hits it, Chip says, the paint can appear blue in some areas, purple in others and do it at the same time. The han¬dlebars, pushrod tubes and coils were painted to match, a nice touch.

Aggression's no slouch. It's got a 124-inch S&S at its heart, beating through a Baker 6-speed. This thing's not going to hold up the progress of any riding pack. Ading a little mechani¬cal music to her is a BDL 3-inch open primary "with a nice whine," Chip says. "It almost sounds like a super-charger." The American Suspension front end's way out there, an 8-over piece set into a 45-degree neck with 6-degree trees. But the trail runs right at 5 inches, Chip says, so it handles really well. "And that's something we pride ourselves in," he says. "Some bikes are built to only look good, but can't do much else. I don't see the point in that. On this one, with its centered engine and tranny, you can let go of the handle¬bars and it'll stay straight right down the road." Wayne Roediger who hails from Sacramento, California, must have seen all this on that Discovery Channel Biker Build-Off show. He immedi¬ately clicked over to Mid-West's Web site (www.mid-westchoppers.com) and made the deal.
